Charge into Reading Decodable Readers are now officially UFLI aligned and listed on both the UFLI Foundations Decodable Text Guide and the Reading League's list of Decodable Text Sources!

Children learn to read a single sound or spelling pattern at a time—not all short vowel sounds at once, but each short vowel sound in isolation. But true reading mastery requires being able to put those sounds together. The CVC Words Beginning Reader Set is ideal for children who have mastered short vowel sounds in isolation, and are ready to begin decoding or "sounding out" sentences with mixed short vowel sounds. This 5-book, 120-page set is the perfect bridge between our Short Vowel Decodable Reader Set, which teaches children how to read a single short vowel sound at a time, and our Consonant Blends Decodable Reader Set, which introduces children to mixed short vowel words paired with consonant blends.

  • Five CVC stories with a true beginning, middle, and end that a beginning reader can ACTUALLY read.
  • Simple sentences: (Jax tugs on his cap. Kip gets his fan. Dot pops the lid on the can.)
  • Only 4 sight (high-frequency) words: a, of, the, to
  • 100 unique VC and CVC words.
  • 40 pages of CVC literacy activities including decoding, phonemic awareness work, and spelling enable small groups or parents to transition seamlessly from reading to practicing literacy skills.
  • Includes digital download of literacy activities PLUS a 47-page ancillary resource pack.

Created and written by best-selling author Brooke Vitale and designed in consultation with Marisa Ware, MSEd, a LETRS, Top Ten Tools, and Orton-Gillingham-trained reading specialist and executive function coach.

Each book in the CVC set contains a CVC story, a complete word list, and 8 pages of CVC literacy activities.

Stage 1.5: CVC Words

At Charge into Reading, we understand that children learn how to read a single sound or spelling pattern at a time. But true reading mastery means being able to decode, or "sound out," words once the sounds are no longer isolated.

That is why we are so excited to introduce Stage 1.5: CVC Words. Bridging the gap between our short vowel books and our consonant blends books, this 5-book, 120-page set gives children added practice reading mixed-short-vowel CVC words before moving onto mixed vowel words that also contain consonant blends.

  • Decoding Text

Decoding text is an important part of comprehension. That means asking a child to read a sentence without any visual cues and then asking them what it said. Offering several similar pictures to match a sentence allows readers to test actual comprehension of the text.

  • Missing Vowels

One of the earliest steps in reading is recognizing the sounds that go into a word. Work with your child to identify each picture word and determine the short vowel sound that would complete the word.

  • CVC Word Match

Many words can look or sound similar when read. This CVC Word Match encourages decoding skills by asking children to read a series of similar words and to determine which one is the right match for the picture.
