The Charge into Reading Decodable Chapter books have been specially crafted to simultaneously support older readers who want chapter books similar to what their peers are reading, but who still need support at lower phonics levels, and younger advanced readers who are ready to read chapter books, but have not yet been taught higher-level phonics skills.

King of the Fish Squad: Digraphs Decodable Chapter Book is perfect for children who have learned how to decode or "sound out" consonant blend and digraph words but are still struggling with fluency and comprehension.

This 64-page book features rich storytelling broken into 10 easy-to-digest chapters. Black-and-white illustrations and a larger size make this book comparable in look and feel to those being read by a struggling reader's peers, while offering approachable text for readers who still need support at a lower phonics level.

King of the Fish Squad is the second book in the Charge into Reading Decodable Chapter Book Series, a structured series of chapter books that builds on the previous books to create a series that children can ACTUALLY read.

  • Scooping practice for every chapter allows a reader to practice reading for fluency before diving into the full chapter.
  • 10 short chapters of only three to four pages long make reading a full chapter accessible.
  • Discussion questions for each chapter follow the story, allowing a reader to check comprehension chapter by chapter, rather than at the end of the book.
  • Detailed black and white art on every spread gives King of the Fish Squad the look and feel of an older chapter book without the higher-level phonics and challenging syntax of a book intended for more advanced readers.
  • High-interest, relatable topics paired humorous situations make for compelling stories that struggling readers will want to read more than once.
  • Only 10 sight (high-frequency) words: be, do, he, into, me, my, to, we, will, you
  • 125 unique digraph words.
  • 7 pages of digraph and story-specific literacy activities including scooping practice, vocabulary, sequencing, cause-and-effect, and story mapping support overall story comprehension.
  • Perfect for younger, advanced readers who have mastered consonant blends and digraphs and want to read a "big kid" chapter book but aren't ready for older, more advanced chapter books.
  • Includes digital download of scooping practice, discussion questions, and literacy activities.

Created and written by best-selling author Brooke Vitale and designed in consultation with Marisa Ware, MSEd, a LETRS, Top Ten Tools, and Orton-Gillingham-trained reading specialist and executive function coach and Casey Harrison, certified academic language therapist (ALTA), licensed dyslexia therapist (TX, ALTA), certified Structured Literacy dyslexia specialist (IDA), and a qualified teacher with more than 27 years of experience.

Rich black-and-white art

Struggling readers want to read "big kid" books, just like their friends are reading.

The Charge into Reading Decodable Chapter Books are designed to look and feel like the same books being enjoyed by more advanced readers.

Rich black-and-white art on every spread paired with a font size appropriate for struggling readers make for an enjoyable reading experience that feels mature.

Short chapters and a cumulative word list built around the science of reading set struggling readers up for success as they master reading fluently and enhance their comprehension.

  • Chapter-by-Chapter Scooping Practice

Chapter-by-chapter scooping practice offers readers an opportunity to practice reading phrases fluently and with expression prior to beginning a chapter. Five phrases pulled directly from each chapter not only offer a preview to what is coming, but also provides readers with a sense of confidence going into the chapter.

  • Chapter-by-Chapter Discussion Questions

Discussion questions following each chapter allow a reader to check their comprehension immediately following a chapter, rather than at the end of the book. The chapter-by-chapter approach means that readers are only being asked to remember what they just read, not what they read days or weeks ago.

  • Literacy Activities

7 pages of digraph and story-specific literacy activities support overall reading comprehension. Activities include scooping practice, vocabulary identification, sequencing, story mapping, cause and effect relationships, and more.

Designed in consultation with a certified dyslexia specialist

We know that struggling readers need all the help they can get to become successful readers. That's why we brought on certified dyslexia specialist Casey Harrison, LDT, CSLDS, CALT.

From advising on chapter length, font size, and font choice to reviewing story and art placement, Casey has had a hand in every part of these books to make sure they are the best resource possible for struggling readers.
